A simpler approach would be using macOS Migration Assistant. This feature lets you easily transfer settings, apps and data from one Mac to another. A very helpful and concise guide on Migration Assistnat and its usage can be found in the Apple Support Article, How to move your content to a new Mac. Jun 24, 2020  This method works well, but it has one drawback: Migration Assistant is an all-or-nothing process when it comes to moving data. It copies everything from one Mac to another. You may not be interested in transferring everything to your new Mac.

My wife and I sometimes want to share files with each other. A year ago we got our first Mac but before that we were both longtime Windows users. In fact neither of us had even touched a Mac before that so everything about OSX is new to us.

I setup different user accounts for us and for the life of me I can't find an easy way to share files. With Windows you have the Public folders where files are easily shared but on the Mac there doesn't seem to be anything like it. I always have to find some clunky workaround to share a file with my wife who is using the very same machine.

There is an equivalent to the Public folders feature in Windows, but it's pretty well hidden. For whatever reason, Apple doesn't make it very easy to use. Fortunately it's not difficult to set up.

When someone shares a folder and gives you edit permissions to it, add the shared folder to your own OneDrive to make it easier to edit and work with the folder and its contents. If you sync the folder to your Windows or Mac computers running the OneDrive app, you can work with the folder offline. May 02, 2017  Any applications you bought or downloaded from the Mac App Store will work, though you may need to enter your Apple ID again the first time you launch them. Commercial applications installed outside the Mac App Store, like Microsoft Office, will make the jump from one Mac to another, but you’ll probably need to re-activate them. Jan 19, 2016  3. Could you please try setting up another IMAP account into your Outlook for Mac client to see if the same issue occurs? - I have another account (info@ account) using IMAP that I have on Outlook for Mac and sent emails to that, dragged in folder etc. To see if the same thing occurred. And yes, it occurs for this too!

First of all, setting up different user accounts on the same Mac is a great way to keep things organized, and I wish more people would do it. You share the same applications and system files, but your individual settings and your documents are completely different. It's an efficient and productive way to let more than one person use the same Mac. So kudos, Doug, on doing the right thing.

If you check your /Users directory, you should see a folder called 'Shared.' That folder is dedicated to shared files that can be managed between different user accounts. A few of the applications I've installed use it so they can run without any trouble regardless of which user account is active, but you can use it for whatever you wish.

To access the Shared folder, simply open the Finder and select the Go menu, then select Go to folder... (or type command-shift-G). Then type /Users and hit return.

You should be staring at the list of user folders on your Mac, with a Shared folder there as well. If you'd like to make it easier to access, simply drag that Shared folder into the Favorites sidebar on the left of your Finder window, or (as I pointed out in last week's column), command-drag it to the Finder toolbar if you'd prefer to have it on the top.

Either way you'll be able to access the Shared folder instantly, so you and your wife can both have access to common files you need. Whoever created the file will retain ownership of it, so the second person will need to make a copy of it and edit the copy.

Another way to do it is to use a third-party sync tool like Dropbox, but that requires you to upload and download the file using the Internet. This way the file stays local only on your Mac, which could be an important consideration if security (or bandwidth conservation) is paramount.

Sometimes you need to move or duplicate files and folders in Mac OS X Lion. One way to copy icons from one place to another is to use the Clipboard. When a file or folder icon is selected, choose Edit→Copy (or use its shortcut, Command+C) to copy the selected icon to the Clipboard. Note that this doesn’t delete the selected item; it just makes a copy of it on the Clipboard. To paste the copied icon in another location, choose Edit→Paste (or use its shortcut, Command+V).

Other methods of copying icons in Mac OS X Lion from one place to another include these:

  • Drag an icon from one folder icon onto another folder icon while holding down the Option key. Release the mouse button when the second folder is highlighted.

When you copy something by dragging and dropping it with the Option key held down, the cursor changes to include a little plus sign (+) next to the arrow.

  • Drag an icon into an open window for another folder while holding down the Option key. Drag the icon for the file or folder that you want to copy into the open window for a second folder (or other hard disk or removable media such as a USB flash drive).

  • Choose File→Duplicate (Command+D) or right- or Control-click the file or folder that you want to duplicate and then choose Duplicate from the contextual menu that appears. This makes a copy of the selected icon, adds the word copy to its name, and then places the copy in the same window as the original icon.

You can cut an icon’s name, but you can’t cut the icon itself; you may only copy an icon.

How To Find Applications Folder On Mac

To achieve the effect of cutting an icon, select the icon, copy it to the Clipboard, paste it in its new location, and then move the original icon to the Trash.

When you copy a file, it’s wise to change the name of the copied file. Having more than one file on your hard drive with exactly the same name isn’t a good idea, even if the files are in different folders.

You can have lots of files with the same name on the same disk. But your Mac won’t let you have more than one file with the same name and extension in the same folder.
